Equine deworming

At the moment, the efficiency of some horse dewormers has largely decreased for certain important parasites of this species. Random deworming is not a recommended technique.  It could even contribute to build resistance to certain dewormers available on the market.

A personalized approach according to every stable or group of horses would be more suited to target those who are the most susceptible to the parasites:  the young horses, the sick ones, etc.  A fecal analysis is an affordable and fast tool that helps us know the kind and quantity of parasites present.  It can also help us know how efficient a treatment was.  Your veterinarian can then propose a treatment targeted for the parasites found for the concerned horses only.  It is not necessarily recommended to treat every single horse. The condition of the pastures must also be considered to minimize their contamination.  Remember  that a horse’s body score,  it’s mediocre performance, or  colic pains, are not absolute signs of parasite infestations.

In conclusion, a personalized approach targeted to every individual /stable is more appropriate to minimize the development of resistance to some products. The stool analysis turns out an effective and cheap tool to help your veterinarian develop an appropriate and effective action plan.
